Companion Home Care recently conducted a mandatory CPR and First Aid training session at their office in downtown Roanoke, VA.

First Aid is the assistance given to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury, with care provided to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, or to promote recovery. CPR, short for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is a lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies, including a heart attack or near drowning, in which someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped.

"I pray to God they never need it, but I want our caregivers to be ready in case there's an emergency with one of their home care clients," said Michelle Belton, a Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) and the owner of Companion Home Care Inc in Roanoke, VA.

The goal of the training session was to educate and empower Companion Home Care staff to render lifesaving aid to their clients in the event of a catastrophe. Caregivers were taught how to recognize the nature of the emergency, and what steps to take to stabilize an individual until emergency medical staff have arrived.

Because procedures are different based on the age of the person in crisis, the training emphasized the proper steps in rendering aid for all ages and conditions, including babies, adults, seniors, and persons who were already injured or medically weak.

In addition to CPR and First Aid, caregivers were trained in the use of an AED device, or Automated External Defibrillator,  a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. AED's are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest, a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating.

"I'd like to thank our wonderful trainers, as well as the Companion Home Care staff, for a fun and informative training session," said Belton.
