Justice in Aging Organization Identifies Common Nursing Home Problems and How to Resolve Them

Companion Home Care owner Michelle Belton, CDP, CAEd, recently completed a training class about common nursing home problems and the best ways to address them offered by the Justice in Aging organization.

Justice in Aging is a national organization that uses the power of law to fight senior poverty by securing access to affordable health care, economic security, and the courts for older adults with limited resources.

“I consider myself an elder advocate so I belong to groups such as Justice in Aging to keep up with all aspects of life issues that our seniors may face,” said Belton.

Ms. Belton elaborated on some key points from the training:

  • A nursing home IS responsible for the oral healthcare of it's residents, either by employing a dentist or arranging for the residents to go outside for dental care.

  • Visiting hours can not be mandated by the facility. A nursing home resident can visit with anyone at any time they choose.

  • A Medicaid patient is to receive the same services and value as any one else. A private pay patient should not get better rooms, more personal attention, or a higher level of care just because they are private.

“As stated in the training, some of the commonplace practices that many nursing homes have employed for decades are illegal by federal law,” said Belton.

“Nursing homes cost a lot of money. Residents need to have higher expectations about the level of care they receive there,” added Ms. Belton.
